The Private Higher Educational Institutions (Amendment) Act 2017 the Amendment Act) was passed in 2017 to amend the principal Act, Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996.
The Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996, (the Act) or Act 555 as it is widely known, is the main legislation that regulates the private sector of higher education in Malaysia. The other statute, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency Act 2007 (MQA Act) regulates quality and standards, and the accreditation of both private higher educational institutions and the courses that are offered in them. The Education Act 1996, which is the parent legislation on education also has a few provisions of a general nature that concern private higher education.
